Three Key Points

  • Scope Creep Kills!
  • You have much more time after you launch than before
  • “A feature is not a feature if you can’t show it to your users”

Talk Recap

Summary

  • Technical Marketing Consultancy (8 people)

The Challenge

Launch a product in 50 hours

  • Not the best way
  • Not a GOOD way
  • Talking about this for people who want to get their product out their shipping
    • Helping overcome fear of failure

Find an Idea

  • Scratch an itch
    • Tools you want (internal)
    • Tools you need for work (external)

PAIN

  • Segmetrics
    • No internal tools for finding the data you want

#1 Rule of MVP

  • Scope Creep Kills!
    • Limited amount of time, money, and effort
    • ESPECIALLY FOR BOOTSTRAPPERS
  • “Should we support multiple CRMs?”
    • NO!
  • If it’s not in the core proposition KILL IT!
  • Don’t waste time on technical development

Pragmatic About Development

  • Famous Examples
    • No billing code (Basecamp)
    • No 3rd Party Apps (iPhone)
    • No account Limits (Summit Evergreen)

Tight Feedback Is Key

  • Idea
  • Feasibility
  • Concept
  • Feedback

Minimal Viable Sellable Example

  • “If you would be able to look at this, would you pay for it?”
  • “A feature is not a feature if you can’t show it to your users”

Building Blocks

  • Simple CRUD
  • Core features available IN BROWSER
  • Looks like poo, but that’s okay
  • If someone can see it, it’s important

Don’t Be Too Slick

  • Better to get great feedback on your core offer than have something super-polished
  • Complicated and slick makes it harder to pivot
    • You get attached to that ‘great’ idea’
    • You get attached to your code
  • Summit Evergreen
    • Great UI, sweet, awesome, so hard to update and make it available

Marketing

  • If you build it, they won’t come
    • Find out where your market hangs out
    • If you don’t know where your market hangs out, build an integration
    • Find out if your market uses that tool
    • If you can integrate with them, you have a ready made market
      • Facebook ads targeting, etc
    • Integrations don’t prevent pivots

“Wish I Had”

  • Email List
  • Best List
  • Lead Magnet
  • Information to Get People In

“Is It Possible”

  • Can we get this idea out the door?
